This year, we celebrate the 35th anniversary of Fairfield Industries developing and patenting the revolutionary Spill Containment Manhole (SCM). Initially designed in 1985 to improve spill containment options for filling stations, this innovative tool utilizes a user-friendly design and has become the industry standard for controlling spills and preventing fuel from seeping into the ground, contaminating soil and groundwater.
The idea started when Fairfield Industries saw the need for new technology to improve on the products available. Prior to the invention of the SCM, the majority of spill containers had internal drains, allowing spillage or water to drain directly into the underground tank. The SCM introduced a design with a sump and manual hand pump that enabled the ability to pump spillage or other fluid not only back into the tank, but anywhere.
Fairfield Industry’s patented design of the SCM not only allows for flexibility with its slip-on flange assembly and easy pump-out but also is constructed of durable, long-lasting stainless steel.
The SCM’s stainless steel bucket with the unique slip-on design with sump and pump is now the industry standard.
Since its introduction in 1985, it has never lost its relevance. We are proud to have developed this technology. We will continue to be a leader in the industry of long-lasting spill containment solutions as well as specialty manhole covers and custom fabrications to meet commercial, industrial, marina, and service station needs.
